Mother's Day Gift - Bespoke Hand Print Coffee Mug

A stunning gift this Mother’s Day for Mum, Nan, Grandma or any other special person in your child’s life.

MothersDayGift_HandPrintMothersDayCoffeeMugThis Mother's Day add a splash of colour to your mornings with a coffee mug featuring your child's hand prints and special message.  Dishwasher and microwave safe too, what more does a Mother want this Mother’s Day than this special gift so read on to learn what you need to do to start creating and ordering one of these masterpieces and also how to WIN.

Materials You will Need: -

Acrylic paints – bright bold colours work best for when it comes time for us to print and just make sure it washes out in water for the little hands.

Paint brush or roller.

A4 paper – we used A4 paper as I am going to scan the images in and my scanner is only an A4 size.

Foil or paint tray – I just used foil folded up so I could toss it afterwards but you could use a paint tray or what you have on hand.

Smock – for your child and yourself.  It turns out I got paint on my clothes and I was predominately behind the camera for this exercise.

Water container to clean the paint brushes.

Baby wipes or be close to a sink to wash your child’s hands between colours if they want to go the multi colour option.

This is Isabella my 5 year old daughter and trusty helper and VERY keen artist for the day.

Read on if you would like some instructions on the best way to create the hand prints or if you’re familiar with hand printing then jump on in and skip to the last section on how to win your very own Mother’s Day Coffee Mug as a unique and special gift for Mum, Nan or Grandma.

Step 1

So to create your hand prints we just used what acrylic paint we had on hand which happened to be a mixture of brands.  Isabella chose the colours she wanted to use but feel free to use just one colour if you or your child wishes.  Isabella likes her colours so it was no surprise to me that she wanted the multiple colour option.

Step 2

Once you’ve got all your colours out start with one colour and have your child use the paint brush or roller to start applying the paint to their chosen hand.  Depending on the child’s age they may or may not need assistance with this.  Have your child try to get an even coverage of paint on their hand (and if they keep it to only their hand you’ve done extra well).  The paint doesn’t want to be too thick or it won’t show the detail of the hand and it also doesn’t want to be too thin as you won’t get enough detail on the print.  So it’s a bit of trial and error and at the end of the day it doesn’t have to be perfect as it all adds to the character of your special coffee mug.

Step 3

Once their hand is painted up have them press their hand down on to the paper while staying within the edges of the paper.  Isabella got a bit carried away a few times with slamming her hand down and her prints were half off the page.  Who cares though as long as you’ve got more paper, just do another print!  Have your child hold their hand for a few seconds when they press down on the paper and try to get them to refrain from the urge of squishing their fingers together, or perhaps that was just Isabella.

If your child has applied too much paint to their hand just have them place it on the paper again without applying anymore paint and see how that print turns out.  The more hand prints the merrier.

Step 4

Wash the paint off your hands in between colours and wash the brush or roller too to keep the colours clean and nice and crisp.

Do as many prints as you wish and just choose the best ones to send us and if there are too many then we can choose the best hand prints to be featured on your special Mother’s Day Coffee Mug.

Oh and while you’re printing why should the kids have all the fun – have a go too.

If you’re sending through hand prints from multiple children just write their names below their hand prints so we can keep track of whose hand print is whose when it comes to printing.

Step 5

Either email or post us your hand prints or if you’re in the Hobart area you are welcome to drop them into us.  Just contact us for our address details.  We will then go on to digitise your child’s hand prints and then turn them into a beautiful gift this Mother’s Day.  You can also add a special greeting and the children’s names too if you wish.
